JULY 13 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 1959 (July 17), famed jazz vocalist and singer Billie Holiday died. Holiday had a long and renowned career as a vocalist and was posthumously inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Holiday’s music did not shy away from political messages. In 1939, she recorded the song “Strange Fruit,” which beautifully decried lynchings and racism in America.
