JUNE 29 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 2013 “The Lani Singers” played at the Glastonbury Music Festival in the United Kingdom. The Singers are led by Benny and Maria Wenda, and include their children, as well. Benny Wenda escaped an Indonesian prison camp in the early 2000s. He is a West Papuan by birth.

The Wendas performs traditional music with the Singers as a form of cultural preservation, since Indonesian authorities attempted to erase West Papuan culture and history during their invasions.

Benny Wenda has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize as a result of his advocacy for West Papua.
