JUNE 8 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

On June 10, 2012, the Mexican movement “Yo Soy 132” organized massive demonstrations in the streets of Mexico City. On that day, theater groups and singers joined with “jarana” players and protesters to play the music of the Huasteca– a region of the country bordering the Gulf of Mexico.

Mariachi bands sang “Las Golondrinas” in front of Televisa offices in the capital city. The activists protested for Mexicans to turn off their TVs, wake up, and demand the truth from the media, and did so with creativity and music.
