JUNE 1 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 2006, Favela Rising, a documentary film which analyzes life in Brazilian slums and features the music and activism of AfroReggae debuted in the United States.

The film focuses on Anderson Sa, a former drug trafficker turned musician who founded the group, AfroReggae.

AfroReggae uses music and education to attract kids away from gangs and prevent gang violence. The group explores a wide variety of musical genres, from reggae to rap and hip-hop.
