MAY 18 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

Famed “Beatles” member, musician, composer, and peace and justice activist John Lennon recorded his first album, Unfinished Music No. 1: Two Virgins, with Yoko Ono this week in 1968.

Lennon wrote numerous songs which expressed his belief in peace with justice.  Lennon also used his stature as an artist to protest for an end to the war in Vietnam.

For instance, in March 1969 Lennon and Ono stayed in their bed on their honeymoon in a “Bed-In for Peace.” Three months later, in a second bed-in, Lennon composed “Give Peace a Chance,” which became an anthem of the anti-war movement in America. Hundreds of thousands of activists sang the tune at a protest against the Vietnam War in November 1969 in Washington, DC.

Lennon is also known for his song, “Imagine,” which includes as its lyrics:

“Imagine all the people

Living for today…

Nothing to kill or die for…”

In 1980, Lennon was tragically killed.
