DECEMBER 29 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

The suffrage movement in the United States lasted from the Antebellum era until the 19th Amendment finally passed in 1920, giving women the right to vote.

Throughout, music played a large role as a form of nonviolent protest. On January 1st, 1909, Henry W. Roby published The Suffrage Song Book, a compilation of some of the most popular songs and parodies from the movement.

Of note is the song “Freedom’s Anthem,” which declares that there is no freedom until equality of the sexes. See this to learn more about the song.
