DECEMBER 15 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

On this date in 2013, Taco Bell featured the popular Indie band “Portugal. The Man” in an advertisement. Portugal. The Man has mostly focused its music on nonviolent activism for endangered species, particularly the severely threatened Sumatran tiger.

The band recorded “Endangered Song” as a way to spread awareness about the Sumatran tiger, of which only 400 remain in the world. Only 400 copies of the song were released as vinyl LPs (thus, the song itself is endangered, as the vinyls will degrade). They continued this activism by performing the song at a free concert at the Smithsonian National Zoo and released the song on Earth Day 2014.
