NOVEMBER 9 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 2007 (November 8), the Puerto Rican band Calle 13 performed at the Latin Grammy Awards in Las Vegas, Nevada. They performed the song “Pa’l Norte” in a presentation with indigenous dancers that showed Latin Americans invading the United States to stay. In their music, however, they do not advocate violence, and instead use music as socio-political commentary.

Made up of stepbrothers Rene Joglar and Eduardo Martinez, as well as half-sister Ileana Joglar, Calle 13 takes strong stances on political issues, such as coming out for Puerto Rican independence from the United States.
