SEPTEMBER 28 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 2009 (September 27, 2009), “FairTunes,” a UK-based charity was registered. According to its website, FairTunes “deliver[s] training in transferable technology, music and radio skills, build[s] music and radio studios, develop[s] and promote[s] musical talent and provide[s] a platform for expression for those that would ordinarily never get access to such opportunities.”

FairTunes has focused on Western Sahara in particular. In 2010, the UK charity Sandblast worked with FairTunes on a studio project in the Saharawi refugee camps in Algeria to help preserve the music and “cultural heritage” of the Saharawi refugees.
