SEPTEMBER 21 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

On September 22, 2009, over 1000 activists in Zimbabwe marched through the streets of Bulawayo to commemorate the United Nations International Day of Peace and to advocate for democratic reforms. The demonstrations were led by the Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) and their male offshoot, the Men of Zimbabwe Arise (MOZA).

The marches were completely peaceful. People sang songs and drummed on empty pots to symbolize how the Mugabe administration was starving its population with high food prices. The activists marched to the steps of a main governmental building.

The protests were met with vicious police reprisals and indiscriminate beatings of men and women.
