SEPTEMBER 14 “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 1973 (September 15), legendary Chilean musician, Communist party member, and activist Victor Jara was tortured and executed by a military coup.

Jara’s songs centered on the importance of love, peace, and social justice. In the 1960s, Jara recorded increasingly political songs, included “Prayer to a Worker” and “I Remember You Amanda.” He backed presidential candidate Salvador Allende by campaigning and paying free concerts.

Though Allende won the election, the United States supported a right-wing coup in Chile which assassinated Allende. Upon Allende’s tragic death, Jara helped mourn his loss and help his followers by playing songs.

Just a day after Allende’s death, Jara and thousands of others were executed by the Chilean army in the Chile Stadium (renamed the Victor Jara Stadium).

Listen to Jara’s “I Remember You Amanda” and learn more about the foundation established in his memory.
