APRIL 13  “THIS WEEK IN THE MUSIC OF NONVIOLENT RESISTANCE”

This week in 1996 (April 16), metal and heavy rock band “Rage Against the Machine (RATM)” released its second album, Evil Empire.

RATM has been highly critical of America’s foreign and domestic policy in its music, and they back up their lyrics by attending anti-war protests and other events. Lead singer De la Rocha said that “I’m interested in spreading those ideas through art, because music has the power to cross borders, to break military sieges and to establish real dialogue.”

The artists participate in nonviolent protests, as well. On August 27, 2008, RATM and other artists marched in an anti-war protest led by Iraq Veterans Against the War.
